We Say
When it comes to machine polishing, most of the attention naturally goes towards cutting and refining pads. However, not every machine application involves removing paint defects. Applying certain paint sealants and finishing products evenly across a large surface can be just as important, particularly when consistent coverage and careful product control are essential.
The Koch-Chemie Polish & Sealing Foam Pad has been developed specifically for these finishing applications. Rather than using a firm foam designed to increase abrasion, Koch-Chemie has selected an extra-soft foam structure intended to spread polishing and sealing products evenly, with very little mechanical cutting action of its own.
One of the standout features is the low-profile construction. At just 25mm thick, the pad sits considerably closer to the machine's backing plate than some conventional polishing pads. This helps reduce the twisting forces generated during machine operation, providing a more stable and predictable feel when working across larger panels or changing direction around bodywork contours.
We particularly like this approach for sealant application. The objective when applying a non-abrasive paint protection product is to create a thin, even film rather than repeatedly work the product into the surface with unnecessary pressure. A soft, stable foam pad makes it easier to control the application and avoid wasting product through excessive loading.
The foam itself features an optimised open-cell structure, which Koch-Chemie describes as having an appropriate degree of reticulation and cell count. This construction contributes to the pad's working characteristics and makes it easier to maintain the foam by allowing residues to be cleaned from its open structure.
Another important detail is the specially milled edge. Rather than relying on a completely square profile, the pad features a shaped outer edge that increases flexibility and helps the working face accommodate curved bodywork. This is particularly useful when working around rounded wings, bonnet contours and other areas where a rigid pad can struggle to maintain even contact.
The coloured non-woven backing material is another thoughtful feature. Koch-Chemie uses colour identification across its polishing system to help distinguish pads intended for different stages of the detailing process. Having the appropriate pad clearly identifiable makes it easier to maintain a consistent working system, especially in professional environments where several different grades of polishing pad may be in use.
Koch-Chemie specifically recommends the Polish & Sealing Foam Pad for products such as 1K-Nano and Lack-Polish grün P1.03. Both are examples of finishing or protection products where controlled application matters more than aggressive defect removal. We'd therefore consider this a dedicated finishing and sealant application pad rather than a substitute for a conventional cutting or medium polishing pad.
It's worth making that distinction because softness alone doesn't guarantee a perfect finish. If the paintwork contains scratches, swirl marks or other defects, those imperfections should be corrected using a suitable combination of abrasive polish and polishing pad before applying protection. The Polish & Sealing Foam Pad is best used once the surface is already in the condition you want to preserve.
The range also includes a particularly useful selection of sizes. The 126mm and 150mm versions are intended for working across larger panels with appropriately sized backing plates, while the smaller 45mm pads are supplied in packs of five. These compact pads are especially useful where a compatible small machine is available for working around narrower or more intricately shaped sections of bodywork.
As with any machine polishing accessory, correct machine setup is essential. The pad must be matched to a suitable backing plate, used with an appropriate product and kept clean throughout the application process. Excessive product loading or unnecessary pressure can undermine the benefits of even the best finishing foam.
For us, the Koch-Chemie Polish & Sealing Foam Pad is a well-considered accessory for detailers who want more control over the machine application of paint protection products. Its combination of extra-soft foam, a stable 25mm profile and flexible milled edges makes it particularly suitable for evenly spreading sealants and finishing products. It isn't intended to deliver substantial paint correction, and that's precisely the point: it's designed to apply the final product carefully and consistently once the preparation work has been completed.
Key Features
Description
The Koch-Chemie Polish & Sealing Foam Pad is an extra-soft finishing pad specifically developed for the economical and even application of paint sealants, finishing polishes and compatible paint protection products by machine.
Its low-profile 25mm construction is designed to reduce torsional forces during operation, improving stability and handling. This makes the pad particularly suitable for spreading finishing products evenly across vehicle paintwork with minimal pressure.
The pad features an optimised reticulated foam structure with open cells, providing excellent working characteristics and helping maintain a clean, consistent application surface. A specially milled outer edge increases flexibility, allowing the pad to adapt more easily to curved panels and bodywork contours.
Koch-Chemie also incorporates colour-coded non-woven backing material to help identify the appropriate pad within its wider polishing and protection system. This is particularly useful when working with multiple pad grades during professional detailing.
The Polish & Sealing Foam Pad is recommended by Koch-Chemie for products such as 1K-Nano and Lack-Polish grün P1.03, where even distribution and controlled application are particularly important.

For paintwork requiring correction before applying protection, we recommend using an appropriate polishing combination such as Koch-Chemie P3.01 Micro Cut & Finish with a suitable polishing pad. Once the required finish has been achieved, the Polish & Sealing Foam Pad can be used for compatible machine-applied protection products.
For a dedicated light-refinement pad, consider the Koch-Chemie Micro Cut Pad, which is designed for use with fine polishing compounds rather than primarily for spreading sealants.

How To Use
1) Prepare the paintwork:
Thoroughly wash and decontaminate the vehicle before applying a finishing or sealing product. Where correction is necessary, complete the required polishing stages first and ensure the paintwork is free from remaining contamination and defects.
2) Follow the protection product's preparation requirements:
Some sealants require the paintwork to be degreased or wiped down before application. Follow the specific manufacturer's instructions for the product being used, including any requirements concerning polishing oils and surface preparation.
3) Choose the appropriate pad:
Select the correct diameter for the working area and ensure the pad is compatible with the polishing machine and backing plate. The 45mm pads are intended for small-area work, while the 126mm and 150mm versions provide greater coverage on larger panels.
4) Inspect the pad:
Before fitting the pad, ensure the foam is clean, dry where required and free from abrasive contamination, hardened residues or damage. Do not use a pad with a deteriorated backing or damaged foam surface.
5) Attach the pad securely:
Centre the pad on a suitable backing plate and check that it is attached correctly. Ensure the backing plate does not extend beyond the intended support area of the foam.
6) Apply the finishing product:
Add an appropriate quantity of a compatible paint sealant or finishing product to the pad, following the chemical manufacturer's application instructions. Avoid excessive loading, as too much product can make even spreading and residue removal more difficult.
7) Spread evenly over the paintwork:
Using a compatible polishing machine at a speed appropriate for the product and pad, spread the protection product over a manageable working area. Maintain controlled machine movement and use minimal pressure, allowing the soft foam to distribute the product evenly.
8) Work around bodywork contours:
Use the pad's flexible milled edge to maintain controlled contact around curved panels. Keep the machine moving and avoid excessive pressure or prolonged contact in one position.
9) Remove residues as instructed:
After application, follow the sealing product manufacturer's instructions regarding drying, curing and residue removal. Where buffing is required, use a clean, suitable microfibre towel to remove excess product and achieve a uniform finish.
10) Clean the pad after use:
Remove the pad from the machine and clean it using a method compatible with the applied product. For water-compatible residues, gentle hand washing may be suitable. Products that cure or harden within the foam may prevent safe reuse, so inspect carefully before subsequent applications.
Important Notes:
✓ Select the correct pad diameter for the machine and backing plate
✓ Extra-soft foam is intended primarily for finishing and sealant application
✓ Use minimal pressure and an appropriate machine speed
✓ Keep the pad clean and free from abrasive contamination
✓ Apply only the amount
