We Say
Cloudy, scratched headlights can make an otherwise lovely car look tired. Cut through years of deterioration and bring back the clarity they've lost.
Few things make a car look older than cloudy, yellowed or heavily scratched headlights. It's particularly noticeable on an otherwise well-maintained vehicle, where the paintwork might be beautifully polished but the headlight lenses still look tired and weathered. Fortunately, provided the lenses are suitable for restoration, it's often possible to make a substantial improvement without immediately replacing the entire headlight assembly.
Koch-Chemie Headlight Polish 1 is designed for the demanding first stage of that process. It's a specialist heavy-cut machine polish formulated for restoring weathered PMMA (acrylic) headlight lenses, with enough abrasive performance to tackle scratches and sanding marks from P1000 grit.
What makes this different from an ordinary finishing polish is its cutting ability. When a headlight lens has suffered significant surface deterioration, a gentle polish simply won't remove defects quickly enough. Headlight Polish 1 provides a more aggressive initial correction step, helping level the damaged surface before moving on to a finer finishing polish.
It's particularly useful after the sanding stage of a headlight restoration. Wet sanding is sometimes necessary to remove heavily deteriorated material and create a uniform surface, but it inevitably leaves abrasive marks behind. Starting with a suitable heavy-cut polish is essential if you're going to refine those marks efficiently rather than spending excessive time with an unsuitable finishing compound.
Koch-Chemie recommends using Headlight Polish 1 with a rotary polishing machine and either its Heavy Cut Foam Pad or a suitable lambswool polishing pad. Work the compound in overlapping crosswise passes using medium machine speed and pressure, taking particular care to control temperature around the plastic lens.
It's important to understand that Headlight Polish 1 is the cutting stage, not necessarily the final finish. Following heavy correction, the lens may still show fine polishing marks or slight haze. That's where Koch-Chemie Headlight Polish 2 comes in, refining the surface to a higher gloss while providing a sealing effect. The two products are designed to complement one another.
Another detail worth noting is that Headlight Polish 1 is silicone-oil-free. That makes it particularly appropriate for a structured restoration process where you want the correction stage to concentrate on abrasive defect removal rather than disguising remaining marks with a cosmetic finish.
Although the product is intended for acrylic headlight surfaces, not every automotive headlight lens is made from PMMA. Many modern headlights use polycarbonate and may have a factory-applied hard coating. Koch-Chemie specifically identifies PMMA in its product information, so we'd always check the lens material and coating before starting any machine polishing or sanding process.
There's also a practical limitation to remember. Polishing can remove suitable surface damage and improve clarity, but it cannot repair internal condensation, cracking, damage beneath the surface or deterioration within the headlight assembly. And if a protective factory coating is removed during restoration, suitable long-term UV protection needs to be considered afterwards.
For us, Headlight Polish 1 makes particular sense for enthusiasts and professional detailers who want a dedicated product for the more demanding stages of headlight restoration. It delivers the cutting performance required to address heavily weathered acrylic lenses, works as part of a logical two-stage polishing system and avoids asking a conventional paint finishing polish to do a job it wasn't designed for.
Key Features
Description
Restore clarity to heavily weathered acrylic headlights with Koch-Chemie Headlight Polish 1, a specialist silicone-oil-free heavy-cut machine polish developed for removing scratches and sanding marks from PMMA headlight lenses.
Designed for demanding headlight restoration work, Headlight Polish 1 provides powerful abrasive correction, including effective removal of sanding scratches from P1000 grit. It is particularly useful after a suitable sanding process, where its heavy-cutting action helps refine the surface in preparation for final polishing.
For best results, Koch-Chemie recommends applying the compound using a rotary polishing machine fitted with a Heavy Cut Foam Pad or suitable lambswool pad. Work in crosswise passes at medium speed and pressure, taking care to manage heat on the plastic lens.
Headlight Polish 1 forms the initial cutting stage of Koch-Chemie's two-step headlight restoration system. Follow with Headlight Polish 2 to refine the surface, maximise clarity and achieve a high-gloss finish with a sealing effect.

How To Use
1) Inspect the headlights:
Check that the lens material is compatible with polishing and assess the level of deterioration. Koch-Chemie specifically recommends Headlight Polish 1 for PMMA acrylic headlights. Do not polish cracked, internally damaged or unsuitable coated lenses.
2) Clean and prepare:
Thoroughly clean the headlight surface to remove dirt and contamination. Mask the surrounding paintwork, trim and vulnerable edges to avoid accidental contact with the polishing pad.
3) Sand if necessary:
Where appropriate and only where the lens material and coating system permit it, carefully prepare heavily deteriorated lenses using a suitable controlled sanding process. Headlight Polish 1 is designed to remove sanding marks from P1000 grit. Sanding should not be undertaken unless removal of existing coatings is appropriate and a suitable protection process is planned.
4) Select the polishing pad:
Fit a Koch-Chemie Heavy Cut Foam Pad or suitable lambswool pad to a rotary polishing machine. Choose a pad size suitable for the headlight shape and the available working area.
5) Apply the polish:
Shake the bottle thoroughly. Apply a modest amount of Headlight Polish 1 to the polishing pad and spread it across the surface before beginning correction.
6) Polish the lens:
Work in controlled, overlapping crosswise passes at medium machine speed and medium pressure, as recommended by Koch-Chemie. Keep the pad moving and monitor lens temperature carefully to prevent overheating or damage.
7) Inspect the correction:
Stop the machine, carefully remove the residue using a clean, suitable microfibre towel and inspect the result. Repeat only where required and where sufficient safe material remains to work with.
8) Refine the finish:
For the best results, follow with Koch-Chemie Headlight Polish 2 using an appropriate polishing pad. This second stage is designed to improve gloss and refine the finish while adding a sealing effect.
9) Protect and maintain:
Check the restored lens for remaining haze, scratches and surface damage. Where sanding or polishing has removed a factory protective coating, consider a suitable long-term UV protection system compatible with the lens material.
