We Say

Even after a thorough wash, automotive paintwork can retain a surprising amount of contamination. Industrial fallout, embedded road grime, insect residues and other deposits can gradually bond to the surface, leaving it feeling rough to the touch. These contaminants aren't always visible, but they can affect the final appearance of the paintwork and interfere with subsequent polishing or protection.

Traditionally, the answer has been a detailing clay bar. While conventional clay remains an excellent tool for removing bonded contamination, it can be relatively time-consuming, particularly when working across larger vehicles. Synthetic clay products offer an interesting alternative, combining an engineered decontamination surface with a more convenient and consistent application method.

The Koch-Chemie Clay Scrubber, manufactured by The Rag Company, follows this approach. Rather than using a conventional malleable clay bar, it features a synthetic clay cleaning surface integrated into a comfortable sponge. This provides a practical way to remove bonded contamination from paintwork and exterior glass without constantly reshaping or folding a piece of detailing clay.

One of its main advantages is the way it distributes pressure. The sponge design sits comfortably in the hand, allowing you to work across the paintwork with relatively even contact. This makes it particularly useful when decontaminating larger panels such as bonnets, roofs and doors, where consistent pressure and controlled movements are important.

However, it's worth understanding that synthetic clay products still rely on mechanical contact to remove contamination. As the clay surface encounters bonded deposits, it helps dislodge them from the paintwork. This process can introduce fine marring, especially on softer clear coats, so adequate lubrication and minimal pressure are essential.

Koch-Chemie specifically recommends using the Clay Scrubber with its dedicated Clay Spray lubricant. This is an important part of the system rather than an optional extra. The lubricant creates a low-friction interface between the synthetic clay surface and the paintwork, helping the scrubber glide more freely while reducing unnecessary friction during decontamination.

We would also recommend carrying out chemical decontamination before introducing the Clay Scrubber. Using suitable iron fallout and tar removers first helps reduce the amount of bonded contamination that needs to be removed mechanically. This generally makes the claying stage easier and can help minimise the amount of contact required.

Another benefit is the convenience of the sponge format. Synthetic clay tools can be easier to handle than traditional clay bars, particularly during longer detailing sessions. The cleaning surface should still be inspected carefully and rinsed regularly, however, as dragging trapped abrasive particles across the paintwork can cause scratching regardless of the tool being used.

For us, the Koch-Chemie Clay Scrubber is a practical alternative to conventional detailing clay, particularly when preparing a vehicle for machine polishing or applying fresh paint protection. Its comfortable construction, consistent contact area and straightforward application make it well suited to regular decontamination work. Used with Koch-Chemie Clay Spray and a sensible technique, it provides an efficient way to restore a smooth, properly prepared surface.

Description

The Koch-Chemie Clay Scrubber is a synthetic clay sponge developed by The Rag Company for quickly and effectively removing bonded contamination from automotive paintwork and exterior glass.

Designed as a convenient alternative to traditional detailing clay, the Clay Scrubber combines a synthetic decontamination surface with a comfortable sponge construction. This allows the user to maintain controlled, even pressure while working across larger painted panels and glass surfaces.

Its specialised cleaning surface helps remove stubborn deposits such as insect residues, embedded road dirt and brake dust that can remain bonded to the vehicle even after thorough washing.

By removing this contamination, the Clay Scrubber helps restore a smoother surface and prepares the paintwork for subsequent polishing, waxing, sealant application or ceramic coating installation.

For optimum performance and lubrication, Koch-Chemie specifically recommends using the Clay Scrubber together with its dedicated Clay Spray lubricant.

Key benefits:
✓ Synthetic clay sponge for mechanical paint decontamination
✓ Removes bonded dirt, insect residues and brake dust
✓ Suitable for exterior automotive paintwork and glass
✓ Comfortable sponge design distributes pressure evenly
✓ Convenient alternative to conventional detailing clay bars
✓ Helps restore a smooth surface before polishing or protection
✓ Designed for use with Koch-Chemie Clay Spray
✓ Ideal for preparing vehicles for paint correction and ceramic coatings

For the best results, we recommend using the Clay Scrubber with a dedicated clay lubricant. Explore our clay bars, towels and lubricants range for suitable decontamination products. Koch-Chemie specifically recommends its own Clay Spray for this scrubber.

Before mechanical decontamination, consider treating the paintwork with a product from our iron contamination remover range. Removing embedded ferrous deposits chemically can help reduce the amount of mechanical agitation required.

Once the paintwork has been thoroughly decontaminated, it can be prepared for polishing or protected using a suitable product from our silica-based ceramic coating collection.

How To Use

1) Thoroughly wash the vehicle:
Begin by washing the vehicle using a suitable car shampoo to remove loose dirt, road film and other contamination. Rinse thoroughly before proceeding.

2) Carry out chemical decontamination:
Where necessary, treat the paintwork with appropriate iron fallout and tar removers to dissolve bonded contamination chemically. This helps reduce the amount of mechanical cleaning required during the claying stage.

3) Prepare the Clay Scrubber:
Ensure the synthetic clay surface is completely clean and free from grit or abrasive contamination. Before use, inspect the scrubber carefully for any particles that could scratch the paintwork.

4) Apply clay lubricant:
Generously spray Koch-Chemie Clay Spray onto the panel being treated. The manufacturer specifically recommends this lubricant for use with the Clay Scrubber to ensure optimum glide across the paintwork.

5) Work the surface gently:
Place the Clay Scrubber onto the lubricated surface and move it gently across the panel using straight, overlapping movements. Apply minimal pressure, allowing the synthetic clay material to remove bonded contamination.

6) Maintain lubrication:
Keep the working area thoroughly lubricated throughout the process. If the scrubber begins to drag or the surface feels insufficiently lubricated, stop and apply additional Clay Spray before continuing.

7) Inspect and rinse:
As the contamination is removed, the surface should begin to feel smoother. Inspect the treated area and regularly rinse the scrubber to remove any collected contamination before moving to another panel.

8) Repeat around the vehicle:
Continue working one manageable section at a time, ensuring the surface remains adequately lubricated and the scrubber stays clean throughout the process.

9) Complete the decontamination:
Once the vehicle has been treated, remove any remaining lubricant according to its instructions. Rinse or wash the vehicle as necessary, then dry using a suitable microfibre drying towel.

10) Inspect the finish:
Check the paintwork under suitable lighting for any marring or fine scratches introduced during mechanical decontamination. Where necessary, refine the surface using an appropriate polishing product before applying fresh protection.

Important Notes:
✓ Always wash the vehicle thoroughly before claying
✓ Use with Koch-Chemie Clay Spray as recommended
✓ Keep the surface generously lubricated throughout use
✓ Apply minimal pressure during decontamination
✓ Work in straight, controlled movements
✓ Regularly inspect and rinse the clay surface
✓ Avoid use on hot panels or in direct sunlight
✓ Test an inconspicuous area before treating the entire vehicle
✓ Inspect the paintwork for marring after use

Important: Mechanical decontamination can introduce fine marring, particularly on softer automotive paint finishes. Never use the Clay Scrubber on a dry surface, and always ensure both the scrubber and paintwork are free from loose abrasive contamination. Follow Koch-Chemie's recommendation to use the product with Clay Spray.
