We Say

Although the FLEX XC 3401 VRG Positive Drive Orbital Polisher is without any doubt one of the best tools currently on the market for serious paint correction work, it is let down slightly by the non-standard backing plate sizes FLEX have adopted for it. The FLEX XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate supplied with the polisher has a diameter of 140 mm, meaning it accepts most pads with a diameter of 150 mm or more. If you want to use smaller pads, you have the option of using either the 115 mm version of the stock plate (shown on this page), which accepts most pads with a diameter of 125 mm or more, or the Lake Country XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate System, which accepts most pads with a diameter of 100 mm or more.

The FLEX XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate is constructed from injection moulded nylon and flexible polyurethane, and incorporates FLEX's proprietary gearwheel fitting system that features exclusively on their XC 3401 VRG Positive Drive Orbital Polisher (please note that these backing plates cannot be used on any other type of machine polisher). Other features include a durable, ultra-fine hook and loop fastening material suitable for use with all makes of polishing pad currently on the market, including foam, microfibre and wool variants, plus an integral steel fitting collar, to ensure precise location and prevent premature wear. The FLEX XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate is currently available in two sizes.

How To Use

General usage notes: (i) always switch off your machine at the mains before fitting or removing a backing plate; (ii) always ensure that you tighten the backing plate sufficiently, but without over tightening it – a half turn of the hex key after it first pinches tight is usually sufficient for safe and effective use, and; (iii) always use an appropriate sized backing plate for the pad you are using – the pad should always protrude past the edge of the backing plate, never the other way around.
