“Hello, this is Rich at Polished Bliss, and in this video I’m going to tell you a little bit about Auto Finesse Tough Coat, and in particular how great it looks, particularly on lighter coloured cars.

So, what is Tough Coat? Well, in simple terms, it’s a synthetic paint sealant that protects car bodywork against bird droppings, bug splatter, road salt and harmful UV rays from the sun. Treated surfaces also become partially self-cleaning, due to a strong water sheeting effect that encourages fresh contaminants to be washed away. This reduces the need for regular maintenance, and makes routine washing easier and less time consuming as a result.

Tough Coat is packed full of acrylic polymers suspended in a solvent-based carrier solution. The acrylic component tends to settle out in the bottle in storage, so you do need to make sure that you shake the bottle thoroughly to re-mix it every time you use it. Application is simple and relatively effortless to say the least. You simply mist a foam applicator pad with product, wipe a thin, even film over each panel, and then buff off the residue once dry. Few other products are as easy to buff off; a gentle wipe with a plush microfibre towel does the trick in no time at all.

Although it will vary slightly from car to car, a lifespan of around three to four months per application is realistically achievable under typical UK driving conditions, even on cars used as daily drivers, and this can be extended further if it is layered from the outset. Like most synthetic sealants, Tough Coat works best on cooler colours, and in particular whites, silvers and greys. This is because it imparts an ultra smooth high gloss finish that greatly enhances reflectivity. And on lighter coloured cars, maximising reflectivity is the secret to achieving a jaw dropping finish.

In summary, Tough Coat is an easy to use synthetic sealant that makes car bodywork look amazing, and also offers long lasting protection against the elements. In our opinion, it’s another must have product from the excellent Auto Finesse line, particularly for white and silver cars. Looks very good!

  2. Edwin says:

Using this tough coat (and even the BMW “hard wax”) after application can it be followed by a carnuba top coat, or do you just reccomend multiple layers of tough coat and that is all?

  3. @Edwin – Tough Coat will happily accept a topcoat of any good quality carnauba wax, but just bear in mind that once you do this you won’t then be able to add more layers of Tough Coat at a later date… only more wax (because waxes will bond to sealants just fine, but sealants will not bond to waxes properly). If it was my choice, I would simply add extra layers of Tough Coat instead of using a wax, because this will give you a very wax-like finish for less effort, and you will be able to top it up whenever you fancy.

Great showcase – I didn’t realise just how good a job it does on white!

  5. Ian says:

After subsequent washes would you recommend another layer of Tough Coat or a particular Quick Detailer?

  6. @Ian – Another layer of Tough Coat is the best option; you can use it as a quick detailer if you like, by spraying on lightly and buffing in (as you would any other quick detailer), or you can of course apply it with a pad and buff it off once dry. Either way works just fine for top up treatments. However, routine topping up isn’t essential, as even a single layer will last for several months and survive multiple wash cycles before starting to wear off.

This is a fantastic sealent and it has just saved my bacon so to speak. I stupidly parked my brand new MX5 under a tree ( never again ) anyway, my paint work was completely contaminated with tree sap. I had previously applied three coats of Tough coat to the MX5 as bug splatter was a problem with it etching into the Mazdas soft paintwork. I thought Jesus I will have to clay the whole car body work along with removing the carefully applied TC sealent. Anyway, TC sealent saved the day, the tree sap simply washed off the body work. I cant recommend this product highly enough and the more layers you apply the better. I will be applying nothing else but this future.

  8. @Paul – That’s great to hear, thanks for taking the time to leave the feedback!

  9. Mr D. Burgess says:

Is there a suitable Auto Finesse sealant for brilliant red paintwork (Audi) and is this colour classed as light or dark?

  10. @Mr D. Burgess – Tough Coat can be used to great effect on all colours; while we feel it works best on lighter colours, it still delivers an excellent finish on darker finishes too. Brilliant Red is definitely a mid-tone colour, and also very rich too, so for the best possible results we would recommend using a good quality carnauba wax on it instead of a sealant. This is because a wax will enhance the richness of the paint, and make it extremely wet looking. In contrast, a sealant will look shiny and reflective, and rather sterile too. Thus, one of the Auto Finesse waxes would be a far better bet.

Thanks for your helpful comments, will give it a try

  12. Roberto says:

    Hi Rich,

is there a version of this wonderful product for dark colours also, especialy for Black cars?

    keep up the good work.

  13. Jon Allum says:

Tough Coat and Tough Prep are fantastic. They are easy apply, easy to buff off and produce a slick and highly reflective finish. They are my preferred choice on cool colours.

  14. @ Roberto – Sorry for the delayed reply; crazy busy here just now. Tough Coat actually does a really nice job on darker colours, giving a lot of wetness and gloss relative to many other sealants, but our long term favourite sealant for use on black finishes is Blackfire All Finish Paint Protection. This gives a very sharp, highly reflective, wet looking finish and is extremely easy to apply and buff off. Well worth reading up about!
