Q: When you regularly detail high-end cars to perfection, but lack the talent to capture equally good images of the results, what do you do?
A: Contact Tim Wallace at Ambient Life.
We have been following Tim’s work for well over a year now, but only recently made the decision to contact him directly when discussions with Green Jersey about the design for our new website threw up some doubt as to whether the quality of our imagery was good enough for use in the main page banners. After introducing ourselves to Tim and explaining our requirements, Tim was kind enough to offer us a licence to use some of his existing work in return for an agreement that we commission him to shoot some of the cars we detail in the future. To say we are delighted by this turn of events is an understatement – Tim’s work is world renowned, and you only have to spend some time on his regularly updated website to see why (be warned; if you click through, you may be there some time, as his portfolio is stunning!).
A master of working with the elements, Tim prefers to shoot in poor weather conditions when moody skies and variable lighting conditions add drama and soul to the images he captures. When you first examine Tim’s work, it is not unreasonable to ask if high dynamic range techniques have been employed, as his exposure control is quite frankly amazing. However, this is categorically not the case, as Tim prefers to work carefully with the available light at each scene, supplementing it where necessary and adjusting his method to suit the prevailing conditions. In essence, Tim visualises the final image in his mind before even picking up his camera, replacing a lot of post-processing work with thought, patience and creative skill. His strong dislike of too much colour means that Tim frequently desaturates his work, removing unwanted colours and making those that remain look richer. All of this makes for a signature style that is unmistakable.
We hope you enjoy viewing Tim’s work as you navigate around our site. Over the next two years we will be replacing the current line up of banners with a collection of images taken by Tim of cars that we will personally detail, and this in turn may give rise to offshoot projects such as limited edition print runs and calendars. It is always wonderful to enter into partnerships with people who are passionate about their work, and who share an appreciation and love of automotive aesthetics. As Tim himself says, “In business, you should be passionate about your product, and inspired by your customers. In my field, the mark of good photography is not simply in the technical elements but is also driven by passion, imagination and the inspiration to capture a great image that is truly emotive and dynamic. Who knows what tomorrow will bring apart from more opportunities?”. We couldn’t agree more, and look forward to a long and prosperous relationship.
