Cleaning wheels can be a chore, particularly after rather spirited driving. Or if you happen to own a car that produces excessive brake dust (e.g. a BMW or a Mini, or anything fitted with aftermarket brake pads). Of course, acid-based wheel cleaners are widely available and usually make short work of stubborn brake dust, but at a price. And that price is often an expensive refurbishment bill a year or so down the line when the acid eventually eats through the clearcoat protecting your rims. What's really needed then, is a product with the cleaning power of a strong acid, but without any of the inherent risks...

Step forward Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel: a revolutionary iron-dissolving gel that is going to change the way we detail forever. Using it makes cleaning wheels a breeze, because it requires little agitation, and you can let it dry out fully if you wish before rinsing it off. What's more, its friendly pH neutral formula also means you can use it in place of detailing clay to safely remove railway dust and iron-rich industrial fallout from your exterior bodywork and glass. And because it works in a touchless way, there is far less chance of you causing fresh marring, making the decontamination process safer.

Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel is a pH neutral cleaner designed to dissolve brake dust and other iron-rich contaminants upon contact. Although created specifically for cleaning wheels, it is also perfectly safe for use on other exterior surfaces in situations where iron contaminants are proving difficult to remove. Examples of such contaminants include railway dust, which can be highly resistant to all but the most aggressive clays, and iron-rich fallout, which can be hard to see but easy to feel with your fingertips.

The main ingredient in Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel is a powerful neutralised acid salt. This reduces iron particles into a soluble form, making them easy to rinse off with a stream of water. As a result, Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel is safer and less aggressive than traditional acid-based wheel cleaners, but equally as effective in terms of cleaning power. Its gel-like composition means it clings to treated surfaces with ease, extending its working time and minimising the need for agitation in all but the most extreme cases.

Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel comes pre-diluted to the correct strength for safe exterior use (it is suitable for use on all exterior surfaces). In all cases, wash and rinse the surfaces you are going to treat in the normal way. Next, spray Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel on liberally, using an Atomiza Generic Bottle fitted with an Atomiza Standard Spray Head. As any iron contaminants dissolve into solution, the initially colourless liquid will gradually turn purple over a period of 5-10 minutes. This effect is often quite pronounced, but don't panic, because it's quite normal.

Although Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel is essentially a touchless cleaner, you can agitate it with either a microfibre towel (on bodywork and glass) or a brush (on wheels) if needs be. After 10-15 minutes, or once the dark purple solution has dried fully (it is perfectly safe to let Wolf's Chemicals Decon Gel dry out if you wish), thoroughly rinse the surfaces you have treated with a strong stream of water. If you let the solution dry fully, you may need to use a stronger jet of water from a pressure washer to remove the hardened film.
