Congratulations to Darren Hughes of Turvey, Bedfordshire, for winning our September show n shine. ScoobyNet regulars will already be familiar with Darren's full on monthly wash and wax routine, but for those of you that aren't, sit back and enjoy yet another brilliant winning entry!
"It was time for my Impreza's monthly wash and wax. I started off by loosening the McGard bolts and raising the car onto axle stands. What a job with a -50mm lowered car, but I got there in the end! I then took the wheels off the car and put them out of the way while I set about cleaning the arches. I applied PS21 Total Auto Wash neat and left it to work its magic for a few minutes, then I used a medium soft brush and a microfibre wash mitt to scrub the arches and loosen the dirt. Finally I hosed everything off and dried the arch liners using a waffle weave microfibre towel.
I then set to work on the alloys. As you can see from the pictures, the alloys were pretty heavily contaminated with brake dust. However, because I seal the wheels every month, I was able to clean them up perfectly using just Poorboys Super Slick n Suds shampoo, a microfibre mitt and a small detailing brush. I then applied a fresh coat of Poorboys Wheel Sealant to each wheel and left it to cure for a good 10-15 minutes before buffing off.
The next stage was to tackle the bodywork and shuts. Firstly I foamed the car and left this to dwell for 5 minutes before rinsing off. I then hand washed the car using the two bucked method, Poorboys Super Slick n Suds shampoo and a fresh lambswool wash mitt. After rinsing again, I dried off using waffle weave microfibre towels, which are well worth the money in my opinion. With the car now clean and dry, I proceeded to apply a coat of Autoglym Super Resin Polish, which I left on for 10 minutes before buffing off with a plush microfibre towel. I then finally applied the wax... which is my favourite part of the whole process for obvious reasons; Poorboys Natty's Paste Wax... hmmm... tasty! I also left this on for about 10 minutes before buffing off with a plush microfibre towel.
To finish the detail, I vacuumed and dusted the interior, cleaned the windows with Autoglym Car Glass Polish and dressed the hard surfaces with Poorboys Natural Look Dressing. The latter product does a great job and leaves surfaces like the dashboard looking lovely and restored. Finally I put the wheels back on and lowered the car back to ground level. The whole job took me the best part of 8 hours plus breaks for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. I was shattered at the end!"
