SCHOLL Concepts state that the best polishing results are only obtained when polishes and pads, like the components in a precision watch, are meticulously designed to work together to enhance each other's performance. Consequently, in recent years, they've invested heavily in extending and optimising their pad range, in order to ensure that new polishing compounds, such as the incredible S20 Black, are properly supported. SCHOLL Concepts 160 mm Spider Pads are the result of this effort, and build on the minimalist nature of the Premium range of pads by incorporating a geometric facing pattern of precision cut slits. This design reportedly increases the effective surface area of the pads, causing them to hold more product and cut harder and more efficiently as a result. For the record, we're not usually fans of patterned pads, as in our experience they tend to provide places for unspent polish to accumulate, which then typically releases itself when you least want it to, i.e. right at the end of a set. However, given the SCHOLL Concepts design philosophy (which eschews looks and novelty marketing features in favour of functionality and intelligent details that add value to the end-user), we decided to put SCHOLL Concepts 160 mm Spider Pads on test. Suffice to say we're glad we did, as they work incredibly well, particularly when used in conjunction with long-throw dual action polishers and one-step compounds such as S20 Black.
SCHOLL Concepts 160 mm Spider Pads are made from ultra high quality proprietary foams, and feature a cross-cut design that increases their effective surface area. Compared to conventional pads, this calibrated surface holds a greater quantity of polishing product where it is needed most, i.e. at the interface between the pad and the paint surface. The net result is an enhanced cutting action, and improved polishing efficiency. All SCHOLL Concepts automotive polishing pads feature a high quality hook and loop backing, which ensures full compatibility with most brands of backing plates. The hook and loop backing disc is also set back a few millimetres from the edge of the pad for safety and complete peace of mind. Three different grades of SCHOLL Concepts 160 mm Spider Pads are currently available; cutting, polishing and finishing (all three grades use reticulated foams with open celled structures, which allows air to freely circulate through the pads and thus carry away heat generated by friction). The cutting pad uses a unique heat-resistant foam, and is relatively firm and unyielding. The polishing pad uses a more pliant foam that is also tear-resistant, which maximises its durability. The finishing pad uses a softer foam with a finer pore structure, making it ideal for refining duties and for applying liquid-based last step products (note that the finishing pad also loses the cross-cut design in favour of a sandwich-style construction).
General usage notes: (i) always select the least aggressive pad you think you will need to achieve the desired result, and step up one grade at a time if more cut is required (ii) always ensure that you centre each pad properly on the backing plate (this can take several attempts to get right, but is vital if the machine is to remain perfectly balanced during use); (iii) always use an appropriate sized pad for the backing plate you are using (the pad should always protrude past the edge of the backing plate, never the other way around); (iv) always ensure that excess polish residue on the face of the pad is brushed off regularly during use using a PB Utility Brush (failure to follow this advice can lead to micromarring of the finish, so don’t be lazy!); (v) after use, soak each pad in a bucket of Lake Country Snappy Pad Cleaner solution for 15 minutes and then rinse under fresh running water (using your fingertips to massage out any remaining polish residue) and allow to dry naturally, and; (vi) whilst not in use, store in a dry, dust-free environment (lidded plastic storage boxes are ideal in this respect).
