RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher

Every now and then a new polishing machine comes along that changes the way that paint correction is performed, and the RUPES LHR 21ES BigFoot Polisher was definitely one of them. Released in 2011, and featuring a gigantic oscillatory throw of 21 mm and an accompanying range of pads and polishes designed to take maximum advantage of this, the LHR 21ES promised nearly the same level of cutting performance as a traditional rotary polisher, but with none of the associated risks (excessive heat) or limitations (hologramming). And, as the last five years have proven, it delivered on this promise almost fully, with widespread approval from (and adoption by) the detailing community as a whole (i.e. both professionals and enthusiasts alike). However, as with all things, the LHR 21ES isn't perfect. Some users still feel that it lacks sufficient cutting power in certain circumstances (mainly when working on harder paint types, and also on concave surfaces, where bogging down can pose an issue), while others have experienced minor issues with their machines (chiefly excessive wear of the anti-spinning cap). As you would expect, RUPES have listened carefully to this feedback, and now responded with a new and improved machine; say hello to the RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher!

Compared to its predecessor, the RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher features a more powerful motor that delivers 30% more torque and eliminates bogging down on concave surfaces. Furthermore, the durability of the anti-spinning cap has been improved, and a number of strategically placed rubber-inserts have been added to aid grip and support the machine in a stable position when not in use. With these improvements in mind, who is the RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher ideal for? Well, given its gigantic 21 mm throw and that it's fixed size 150 mm proprietary backing plate only accepts RUPES 180 mm BigFoot Polishing Pads, the answer is anyone who routinely needs to polish large areas to a very high standard in as little time as possible. From a non-professional point of view, this means enthusiasts who own large cars with flat expansive panels, e.g. luxury saloons and 4x4s, as the LHR 21 Mark II makes short work of large areas of paint that are easily accessible. From a professional point of view, this means bodyshops and detailers who need to quickly correct large areas of paint without using rotary polishers (due to risk and time constraints). Time is money in professional circles, and an investment in a RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher will quickly pay off (having to invest in multiple RUPES BigFoot polishers in order to be able to use a range of pad sizes is not as painful as it sounds, due to the significant performance benefits and time savings on offer).
The RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher is a CE approved 230 volt UK specification dual action polisher with a difference. In contrast to many of the low cost dual action machines currently available, the LHR 21 Mark II features a gigantic 21 mm throw (most dual action polishers feature a throw of 8 mm or less). As a result of having a much longer throw, the LHR 21 Mark II maximises the effective cutting power of any given pad and polish combination (because the abrasives are worked across a much larger area per oscillation). The net effect of this is that the LHR 21 Mark II does more cutting in less time, and this effect is further enhanced by the use of a fixed size 150 mm proprietary backing plate that only accepts RUPES 180 mm BigFoot Polishing Pads (the largest ones available in the BigFoot range). Given all of this, it should come as no surprise to hear that RUPES designed the LHR 21 Mark II with professional bodyshop environments in mind, where polishing large areas of fresh paint to a high standard in the shortest possible time is critical to profitability. Consequently, although it cuts faster, the LHR 21 Mark II isn't as practical as its smaller brother, the LHR 15 Mark II, for detailing, as its larger polishing footprint often feels cumbersome when working on curved surfaces and in tight areas against edges.

Given the above design philosophy, it should come as no surprise that the RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher also incorporates a number of other innovative features that are of equal benefit to professionals and enthusiasts alike. These include a lightweight, ergonomically-efficient, low profile body with a beautifully shaped head that is supremely comfortable to hold, numerous strategically placed rubber-inserts to aid grip and support the machine in a stable position when not in use and speed controls (throttle lever, speed selection dial and trigger lock) that are all within very easy reach of the main control handle. Furthermore, by developing a carefully weighted fixed size backing plate and a complementary range of pads, RUPES have produced a beautifully balanced machine that is incredibly smooth and largely free of the horrible vibrations usually associated with dual action polishers. This means that the LHR 21 Mark II can be safely controlled with just one hand (which is useful when polishing large roofs and bonnets) and can be used for lengthy periods without causing hands and fingers to become numb or affected by pins and needles.

As the above description indicates, the RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher forms part of an innovative system of dual action machines and accessories (collectively termed the RUPES BigFoot Random Orbital Polishing System) that has been designed and engineered from the ground up to produce optimal results in minimal time whilst simultaneously maximising user comfort and safety. In line with this, RUPES recommend that the RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher is used exclusively with appropriately-sized accessories and parts from this system. Currently, the RUPES LHR 21 Mark II BigFoot Polisher can be bought separately or as part of three different pre-bundled kits, the contents of which are described in full below. Please note that the machine comes with a one year return to base warranty, but in the event of a fault developing this warranty will only be honoured if the machine has been used exclusively with accessories and parts from the RUPES BigFoot Random Orbital Polishing System; non-observance of this requirement automatically terminates the warranty.

Although polishing with a dual action machine polisher is a relatively straightforward process, there are various important practical points to consider that are too numerous and involved to go into in detail about here. Therefore, if you require more detailed information about dual action machine polishers and how to use them safely and effectively, please take the time to read both the instructions supplied with your kit and our illustrated guides entitled "What Does Polishing Do?" and "What Polish Should I Use?".

Recommended method for correcting soft paint using the BigFoot system:

To correct obvious swirl marks and other common paint defects, start out with RUPES Keramik Gloss (Fine Gel Compound) on a RUPES Fine BigFoot Polishing Pad (Yellow). Working at a low to moderate machine speed, with moderate arm speed and light to moderate pressure, should enable you able to correct a large proportion of the defects in just 1-2 attempts per 18 x 18 area. If your paint is in bad condition and you subsequently find that more correction is needed, switch to RUPES Quarz Gloss (Medium Gel Compound) on a RUPES Medium BigFoot Polishing Pad (Green) - this product and pad combination offers much more cutting power, but should be used sparingly, as the rate of paint removal increases significantly. When you are happy with the level of correction, follow up with RUPES Keramik Gloss (Fine Gel Compound) on a RUPES Fine BigFoot Polishing Pad (Yellow) again, in order to maximise surface gloss. If you really want to go to town, you may wish to perform an additional final jewelling step with RUPES Diamond Gloss (Ultra Fine Gel Compound) on a RUPES Ultra Fine Polishing Pad (White) prior to applying your favourite sealant or wax.

Recommended method for correcting intermediate paint using the BigFoot system:

To correct obvious swirl marks and other common paint defects, start out with RUPES Quarz Gloss (Medium Gel Compound) on a RUPES Medium BigFoot Polishing Pad (Green). Working at a moderate machine speed, with low to moderate arm speed and light to moderate pressure, should enable you able to correct a large proportion of the defects in just 1-2 attempts per 18 x 18 area. If your paint is in bad condition and you subsequently find that more correction is needed, switch to RUPES Zephir Gloss (Coarse Gel Compound) on a RUPES Coarse BigFoot Polishing Pad (Blue) - this product and pad combination offers much more cutting power, but should be used sparingly, as the rate of paint removal increases significantly. When you are happy with the level of correction, follow up with RUPES Keramik Gloss (Fine Gel Compound) on a RUPES Fine BigFoot Polishing Pad (Yellow), in order to maximise surface gloss. If you really want to go to town, you may wish to perform an additional final jewelling step with RUPES Diamond Gloss (Ultra Fine Gel Compound) on a RUPES Ultra Fine Polishing Pad (White) prior to applying your favourite sealant or wax.

Recommended method for correcting hard paint using the BigFoot system:

To correct obvious swirl marks and other common paint defects, start out with RUPES Zephir Gloss (Coarse Gel Compound) on a RUPES Coarse BigFoot Polishing Pad (Blue). Working at a moderate to high machine speed, with low arm speed and light to moderate pressure, should enable you able to correct a large proportion of the defects in just 1-2 attempts per 18 x 18 area (note that this polish and pad combination may need to be used repeatedly to fully correct deeper defects on ultra hard paint types).

General usage notes for machine polishing pads:

(i) always ensure that you centre each pad properly on the backing plate (this can take several attempts to get right, but is vital if the machine is to remain perfectly balanced during use); (ii) always use an appropriate sized backing plate for the pad you are using (the pad should always protrude past the edge of the backing plate, never the other way around); (iii) always ensure that spent polish residue on the face of the pad is brushed off regularly during use using a PB Utility Brush (failure to follow this advice can lead to micromarring of the finish, so dont be lazy!); (iv) after use, soak each pad in a bucket of Lake Country Snappy Pad Cleaner solution for 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly under fresh running water and allow to dry naturally, and; (v) whilst not in use, store in a dry, dust-free environment (lidded plastic storage boxes are ideal in this respect).
