Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant

Every now and again the car care rulebook is torn up and rewritten by innovative new technologies that come along and redefine what we can expect from car care and detailing products. Currently, we are in the midst of such a period of change, this time brought about by the application of nanotechnology to surface coating science. At the most basic level, nanotechnology can be defined as the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale. In relation to car care, nanotechnology can be used to make advanced protective coatings that do not just adhere to vehicle surfaces, but rather become part of the surfaces themselves.

Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant is one such nanotechnology coating that simultaneously protects and enhances the appearance of automotive paint on a timescale of years rather than months. Developed in Germany, it utilises a wet sol-gel process to lay down a self organising microfilm of silica and other nano-scale components that chemically bonds to painted surfaces at the molecular level. This invisible glass-like coating not only provides excellent protection against bird droppings, bug splatter, brake dust, road salt and harmful UV radiation for up to twenty four months at a time, but also partially mimics the self cleaning properties of Lotus plant leaves in nature (the Lotus Effect).

The Lotus Effect refers to the amazing self cleaning properties of the Lotus plant, which is so efficient that even honey and water-based glues roll straight off the leaves, leaving no trace behind. Research by German scientists in the 1970s revealed that this extreme self cleaning effect is the result of Lotus leaves having a rough micro-structured surface covered in nano-scale wax crystals, which together serve to repel water and prevent wetting of the leaf surface. As a result, water droplets coming into contact with the leaf surface remain almost perfectly spherical and roll off under gravity, picking up particles of dirt and cleaning the leaf as they go.

Of course, while nature has long since perfected the Lotus Effect, the key question here is how well does this new coating perform in this respect on cars? The answer is very well. In tests on our own vehicles we have found that treated surfaces do indeed stay cleaner for longer compared to traditional wax and sealant coatings. However, this effect is by no means perfect due to the need to balance performance with long-term durability, so washing will still be required on a semi-regular basis. Given the all round strength of the benefits on offer, Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant is going to be seeing a lot of use in our studio in the future.

Material Safety Data Sheet

Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant is an advanced nanotechnology coating that simultaneously protects and enhances the appearance of automotive paint. Developed in Germany, Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant utilises a sol-gel wet chemical technique to lay down a self organising interlaced molecular net of silica and other nano-scale components to form an extremely thin (< 0.1 micron) fully transparent glass-like coating that chemically bonds to painted surfaces at the molecular level.

As a result of being coated with this ultra smooth layer of nano-structures, treated surfaces become more reflective, super hydrophobic (contact angle > 150°) and partially self cleaning (super hydrophobicity results in more contaminants being picked up and carried away by strong water beading rather than deposited in situ, akin to the Lotus Effect in nature). This characteristic greatly reduces the need for regular maintenance, and makes washing easier and less time consuming when required.

However, the benefits imparted by Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant do not end with an easy to care for mirror-like finish. More importantly, the invisible glass-like coating provides excellent protection against bird droppings, bug splatter, brake dust, road salt and harmful UV radiation for up to twenty four months at a time, even on daily drivers (the coating is extremely resistant to strong detergents and pressure washing equipment, and once fully cured can only really be removed by aggressive machine polishing).

How exactly does the application process work? In reality the science behind the sol-gel process is complicated, but in simple terms Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant comprises three main nano-scale components (silica particles, detention particles and anti-detention particles) suspended in a solvent-based solution (which prevents the components from interacting in the bottle, although users should note that the shelf life of this product is just twelve months, due to the highly reactive nature of the nano-scale components).

Upon application, the solvent carrier progressively evaporates, causing the remaining components to form a gel-like microfilm on treated surfaces. Then, as further evaporation and hardening occurs, the silica particles condense to form a highly structured glass-like lattice (to give protection), while the detention components form permanent molecular bonds with the paint (to give durability) and the anti-detention particles migrate to the microfilm surface (to repel water and contaminants).

Stage 1 - The nano-coating, containing the detention components, nano-scale particles and anti-detention components, is applied to the designated painted surface.
Stage 2 - Almost immediately, the solvent in the coating starts to evaporate, causing the remaining components to begin to organise themselves into a gel-like microfilm.
Stage 3 - As further evaporation cccurs, the three main components cure to form a very firmly bonded tripartite glass-like lattice on the designated painted surface.

Material Safety Data Sheet

Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant should be applied in a warm (15°C – 30°C), dry, well ventilated environment out of direct sunlight. Users should wear PB Nitrile Gloves throughout the application procedure, and should also consider using a 3M Respirator too. In order to achieve the quoted durability and associated performance benefits, it is absolutely essential that surfaces to be treated are cleaned properly in advance (in a nutshell, the cleaner the paint is before the sealant is applied, the longer the protective microfilm will last). Even after thorough washing, decontamination and corrective polishing, it is still essential to clean the paint with Nanolex Premium Paint Cleaner a few minutes prior to the application of Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant, as this will ensure that any remaining oils and contaminants are fully removed.

Before applying the sealant, shake the bottle vigorously to ensure that the contents are fully mixed. Next, lightly wet either a cotton make up pad or a Meguiar’s Microfibre Applicator Pad with product and begin wiping evenly over the first section of paint to be treated. We recommend that only small sections of paint are treated at a time, each measuring no more than 12” x 12”; this is because buffing off must be completed within 1-2 minutes of the application, i.e. before the sealant starts to harden. Buffing off is best accomplished with a Poorboy’s Deluxe Mega Towel using moderate speed and pressure in order to fully remove any excess product and reveal an intense streak-free shine. Check each area carefully for any smears and fully remove them before moving on; failure to remove smears fully can result in them hardening to the point of being impossible to remove without machine polishing, so be thorough!

After all surfaces are treated, the car must then be left in a warm (15°C – 30°C), dry, well ventilated environment out of direct sunlight for a minimum of 12 hours in order to allow the microfilm to cure (note that you should avoid washing the car for a minimum of 36 hours following treatment, just to be on the safe side). Although Nanolex Professional Paint & Alloy Sealant offers excellent protection against many environmental influences, it should still be maintained carefully. For example, intensive shampoos and alloy wheel cleaners should be avoided in favour of milder pH neutral products (Nanolex Reactivating Shampoo is excellent in this respect), and the microfilm finish should occasionally be repaired and refreshed with a top up application of Nanolex Premium Spray Sealant after washing and drying.
