Meguiar's 160 mm DA Microfibre Discs

Meguiar's have done it again. They've thought long and hard about a challenging issue facing the detailing community, and then broken the mould with a cutting edge solution. In this case, they've developed a brand new dual action polishing system that addresses the issue of machine polishing enthusiasts desiring the performance benefits afforded by rotary polishers (greater cutting power, sharper finishing, etc) but without the risks (excessive paint removal, burning through, etc).

The key feature of this new system is the brand new microfibre discs that replace traditional foam pads. These discs use varying grades of microfibre material and flexible backing foam to generate the cut and finishing performance usually associated with rotary polishing, albeit in a faster, safer and easier to use format. The feel of these discs takes a bit of getting used to, but once you've sussed them then you'll really appreciate the performance benefits, particularly for enhancement style details and cars with sticky paint.
Meguiar's 160 mm DA Microfibre Discs are part of a brand new polishing system designed to bridge the gap between dual action polishing and rotary polishing in terms of performance and safety. In fact, they are the most important part of this new system, because they generate the extra cut required to give rotary-like levels of performance using a dual action machine. Much like wool pads in the context of rotary use, these new microfibre discs cut harder than traditional foam pads, and yet still finish down equally well.

Two types of disc are available, each having been designed to work with a specific polishing product in the new system. The cutting version designed to work specifically with Meguiar's DA Microfibre Correction Compound, and features a short, dense pile, while the finishing version is designed to work specifically with Meguiar's DA Microfibre Finishing Wax, and features a long, soft pile. In both cases, the microfibre pile sits atop a colour-coded foam layer (burgundy for cutting, black for finishing) with a hook and loop backing.
General usage notes: (i) always select the least aggressive pad you think you will need to achieve the desired result, and step up one grade at a time if more cut is required (ii) always ensure that you centre each pad properly on the backing plate (this can take several attempts to get right, but is vital if the machine is to remain perfectly balanced during use); (iii) always use an appropriate sized pad for the backing plate you are using (the pad should always protrude past the edge of the backing plate, never the other way around); (iv) always ensure that excess polish residue on the face of the pad is brushed off regularly during use using a PB Utility Brush (failure to follow this advice can lead to micromarring of the finish, so dont be lazy!); (v) after use, soak each pad in a bucket of Lake Country Snappy Pad Cleaner solution for 15 minutes and then rinse under fresh running water (using your fingertips to massage out any remaining polish residue) and allow to dry naturally, and; (vi) whilst not in use, store in a dry, dust-free environment (lidded plastic storage boxes are ideal in this respect).
