The FLEX XC 3401 VRG Positive Drive Orbital Polisher has been available in the UK for many years now, but we long held off using it and stocking it for one simple reason; its exclusive gearwheel fitting system. This proprietary system necessitates the use of FLEX geared backing plates, the smallest of which, at 115 mm, effectively precludes the use of spot pads, which we consider to be essential to the paint correction process. However, a solution now exists to this problem in the form of the Lake Country XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate System, as this allows 100 mm spot pads to be safely used. As a result, the FLEX XC 3401 VRG Positive Drive Orbital Polisher is now a more compelling proposition for professional correction work.
The Lake Country XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate System broadens the size range of pads that can be safely used on the FLEX XC 3401 VRG Positive Drive Orbital Polisher (from 120 mm - 160 mm to 100 mm - 160 mm). The system consists of two components: (i) a geared base plate (that replaces the original FLEX backing plate), and; (ii) a 100 mm backing plate with an ultra-fine hook and loop fastening material, which enables the safe use of spot pads with a hook and loop backing measuring 100 mm or more across. To use the Lake Country XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate System, you simply loosen and replace the original FLEX backing plate with the new geared base plate, and then affix and tighten the new 100 mm backing plate.
Fitting instructions: (i) always switch off your machine at the mains before fitting the Lake Country XC 3401 VRG Backing Plate System; (ii) remove the original FLEX backing plate using the Allen key supplied with your machine; (iii) fit the geared base plate, making sure that the slot sits down onto the spindle of the machine properly; (iv) drop the two large thin washers into the well of the geared base plate (i.e. on top of the slot); (v) fit the 100 mm backing plate onto the geared base plate, making sure that the tabs drop into the slots to give a flush fit; (vi) drop the small thick washer into the well of the 100 mm backing plate; (vii) insert the bolt and tighten it sufficiently using an appropriately sized Allen key, but without over tightening it – a half turn of the Allen key after it first pinches tight is usually sufficient for safe and effective use.
