Gyeon Q² Mohs+ (CERTIFIED DETAILERS ONLY)

Gyeon Q² Mohs+ is an ultra durable quartz coating system that showcases the latest advances in low volatile silicon (Si) technology. Put simply, it is the most advanced paint protection system in the world today, and is backed by a five year conditional warranty provided by Gyeon and supported by the certified Gyeon detailer who applies it. If, like us, you always question the relative performance of such products, then you're probably wondering how Gyeon Q² Mohs+ differs to rival products and, maybe more importantly, how it compares to Gyeon Q² DuraBead? The answers to these questions all stem back to its unique two-stage formula, which lays down a hybrid film of organic-silica that actually increases in molecular weight as it cures, forming an amorphous (pore-free) organic-silica nano-composite. None of the other SiO2-based coatings we stock work in the same way; they lay down glass-like coatings that form strong molecular bonds and, in some cases, fully crystallized lattices, but none are as dense (and thus as scratch resistant) and durable as Gyeon Q² Mohs+.

Now that we have confirmed how the Gyeon Q² Mohs+ system differs to rival products, we can look at the benefits it offers. Firstly, because none of the products in the set contain alcohol, they don't flash off rapidly upon contact, which makes them easier to apply. Secondly, because they form a dense pore-free protective layer as they cure, they produce a substantially harder and more durable coating than rival products. We've tested this by subjecting Gyeon Q² Mohs+ to a brutal decontamination test, in which selected panels were: (i) treated with a spirit-based tar remover; (ii) treated with a strong acid-based fallout remover; (iii) clayed with a mild clay bar, and; (iv) treated with neat isopropyl alcohol. The net effect of this treatment was to all intents and purposes negligible; the panels were left beading just as strongly as the day the Gyeon Q² Mohs+ system was first applied. Furthermore, in a long-term test on a daily driver, we observed evidence of functioning protection right through to the three year mark, which places Gyeon Q² Mohs+ in a league of its own in terms of durability.

Given that Gyeon Q² Mohs+ is significantly more advanced than many rival products, and offers the longest lasting protection of any coating available today, a key question remains; how does it compare to Gyeon Q² DuraBead? This is a tough call, because both systems represent the state of the art in quartz coating technology, and both deliver exceptional results that are fully warrantied. Getting down to the nitty-gritty, Mohs+ is likely to last the longest, as both of its constituent components are SiO2-based (i.e. both Mohs and Phobic are quartz coatings in their own right). The same cannot be said for DuraBead, because its Bead topcoat is fluorine-based, and therefore doesn't reinforce its Mohs basecoat in the same way. However, while Mohs+ is likely to last the longest, it doesn't bead water anywhere near as strongly, or for as long. In contrast, thanks to Bead's fluorine-based formula, DuraBead displays the most pronounced beading of any coating in the world today, which endures for a minimum of twenty-four months. Thus, choosing between them essentially boils down to greater durability (Mohs+) versus stronger beading (DuraBead).

Gyeon Q² Mohs+ is a state of the art quartz coating system that simultaneously protects and enhances the appearance of automotive paint. It achieves this through the use of two distinct products that are supplied as a kit; Gyeon Q² Mohs and Gyeon Q² Phobic. The former uses the latest in low volatile content silicon (Si) technology to lay down a hybrid film of perhydropolysilazane (PHPS), hydroxyl-rich organic copolymers and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) that condenses rapidly to form an amorphous organic-silica nano-composite that chemically bonds to painted surfaces at the molecular level. Unlike rival products, Gyeon Q² Mohs actually gains molecular weight as it cures (as skeletal Si-N bonds are replaced with Si-O bonds), which improves its structural integrity and restricts its shrinkage to 5% during the curing process (the average figure for SiO2 coatings is 30%). As a result, each coat of Gyeon Q² Mohs imparts a measurable 0.2 micron increase in total paint thickness, and significantly improves the scratch resistance of the underlying finish; on average, each coat adds two grades of hardness (2H) on the Mohs scale.

The second product in the system, Gyeon Q² Phobic, uses similar silicon (Si) technology to lay down a hybrid film of perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) and organopolysilazane (OPSZ) that condenses rapidly to form an organic-silica coating that chemically bonds to the Gyeon Q² Mohs basecoat. As a result of comprising a greater proportion of organic components (hydrocarbons), this sacrificial topcoat subtly alters the look of the Gyeon Q² Mohs finish (by adding extra richness and gloss) and modifies its behaviour with respect to water and oil-based liquids. Whereas surfaces treated with Gyeon Q² Mohs become moderately water-hating (hydrophobic), the addition of Gyeon Q² Phobic also enhances their slickness, which causes rainfall and rinse water to bead up and sheet off even more quickly. This not only enhances the self-cleaning effect for which Gyeon Q² Mohs is famed, but also serves to reduce the risk of water spots forming during the first few weeks following application. Moreover, surfaces treated with Gyeon Q² Phobic also become naturally oil-repellent (lipophobic), meaning that it effectively seals them against graffiti and most other forms of paint. This technology has recently been adopted by many rail operators and facilities management companies, and has already proven itself to be highly effective.

In addition to the strong self-cleaning and anti-vandalism properties outlined above, Gyeon Q² Mohs+ also provides excellent protection against bird droppings, bug splatter, road salt and harmful UV radiation for upwards of sixty months (it is impervious to cleaning chemicals and pressure washing, and once fully cured can only be removed by machine polishing). Indeed, every Gyeon Q² Mohs+ kit comes supplied with a five-year conditional warranty, which reflects the faith that Gyeon place in their flagship products. However, in order to ensure that Gyeon Q² Mohs+ performs properly, it must be applied by a certified Gyeon detailer. In order to become certified, detailers have to prove to Gyeon that their quality control criteria will be fully met, by fulfilling strict craftsmanship and studio requirements. For example, it is essential that Gyeon Q² Mohs+ is applied indoors in an environment where temperature, humidity and lighting are all able to be controlled; it is simply not appropriate for it to be applied in any other setting. As a result, Gyeon Q² Mohs+ may only be purchased by certified Gyeon detailers. Gyeon Q² Mohs+ is currently supplied as a pre-packed kit containing either a 50 ml or 100 ml bottle of Gyeon Q² Mohs, a 20 ml bottle of Gyeon Q² Phobic, a Gyeon Q²M Applicator Block, four Gyeon Q²M Applicator Suedes, a 3M disposable respirator and an instruction booklet.

You should apply Gyeon Q Mohs+ in a dry place out of direct sunlight. In all cases, prepare the surfaces you are going to treat in the normal way (wash > decontaminate > polish), and then do a wipe down with Gyeon QM Prep to ensure that they are spotlessly clean. Next, using the supplied dropping pipette, lightly wet one of the supplied Gyeon QM Applicator Suedes with Gyeon Q Mohs, wrap it around the supplied Gyeon QM Applicator Block and begin wiping it evenly on to the first panel, using light pressure and overlapping strokes. You should aim to treat no more than a single panel at a time, because after an initial volatilization period of 3-5 minutes you must then buff off the (still wet) residue as quickly as possible, i.e. before it dries out and begins to harden. Buffing off is best accomplished with a PB Super Buffing Towel using moderate speed and pressure in order to fully remove the residue and reveal an intense streak-free shine. Using a bright light, check the panel carefully for any smears and remove them before moving on; failure to remove smears fully can result in them hardening to the point of being impossible to remove without machine polishing, so make sure you are thorough!

After all panels are treated wait for a minimum of an hour and then apply a second coat. The car must then be left in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight for a minimum of 4 hours to allow the organic-silica nano-composite to partially harden (if you wish, you can accelerate this process by heating the treated panels to 60C for 10 minutes using an infra-red heat lamp). Next, lightly wet one of the supplied Gyeon QM Applicator Suedes with Gyeon Q Phobic, wrap it around the supplied Gyeon QM Applicator Block and begin wiping it evenly on to the first panel, using light pressure and overlapping strokes. You should aim to treat no more than a single panel at a time, because after an initial volatilization period of 1-2 minutes you must then buff off the (still wet) residue as quickly as possible, i.e. before it dries out fully. Buffing off is best accomplished with a PB Super Buffing Towel using moderate speed and pressure in order to fully remove the residue and reveal an intense streak-free shine. Using a bright light, check the panel carefully for any smears and remove them before moving on; failure to remove smears fully can result in them drying and out and becoming difficult to remove, so make sure you are thorough!

After all panels are treated the car must then be left in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight for a minimum of 24 hours to allow the organic-silica nano-composite to harden further (if you wish, you can accelerate this process by heating the treated panels to 60C for 10 minutes using an infra-red heat lamp). Finally, to reduce the risk of water spots forming while it continues to cure (full curing takes around 14 days to achieve), you should apply a protective topcoat of Gyeon QM Cure (you should also avoid washing the car with any kind of detergent for the first 7 days). Please note that you must discard all used applicators and towels after you've applied each coat of Gyeon Q Mohs because it hardens massively as it cures, forming a residue that has the potential to inflict severe marring or worse if applicators and towels are re-used. Furthermore, after each use you must also replace the dropping pipette with the air-tight cap, and then wash out the pipette with hot water. Failure to follow these steps will result in any leftover product setting solid in the bottle and the pipette, rendering them unusable in the future.
