GYEON Q2 MOHS is a new state of the art quartz coating that showcases the latest advances in low volatile silicon (Si) technology. If, like us, you always question new developments in the world of car care, then you're probably wondering how GYEON Q2 MOHS differs to rival products, and what it offers that they don't? And maybe more importantly, how it justifies its high price tag? The answers to these questions all stem back to its unique alcohol-free formula, which lays down a hybrid film of organic-silica that increases in molecular weight as it cures, forming an amorphous organic-silica nano-composite. None of the other SiO2-based coatings we stock work in the same way; they lay down glass-like coatings that form strong molecular bonds and, in some cases, fully crystallized lattices, but none are as structurally dense (and thus as resistant to external factors) as GYEON Q2 MOHS. This is supported by the fact that each layer of GYEON Q2 MOHS shrinks by less than 5% as it cures, whereas the average figure for other SiO2-based coatings is 30%.

Now that we have confirmed how GYEON Q2 MOHS differs to rival products, we can look at the benefits this brings. Firstly, because it contains no alcohol, it does not flash off rapidly upon contact, which makes it far easier to apply. Secondly, because it forms an amorphous solid (without pores) as it cures, it produces a substantially harder and more durable coating than rival products. We've tested this by subjecting GYEON Q2 MOHS and the closest rival products we stock to a brutal decontamination test, in which selected panels were: (i) treated with Auto Finesse Oblitarate; (ii) treated with Auto Finesse Iron Out; (iii) clayed with Auto Finesse Clay, and; (iv) treated with neat isopropyl alcohol. With the exception of GYEON Q2 PRIME, rival products were clearly stripped to a large extent (greatly diminished beading), but the panel treated with GYEON Q2 MOHS was left beading just as strongly as the day it was first applied.

Given that GYEON Q2 MOHS is significantly more advanced than rival products, and offers greater durability, more scratch resistance and better protection against the elements, a key question remains; does it offer good value for money? This is a tough call, because at just under £70 per application (on an average-sized car) it is, by some considerable margin, the most expensive paint protection product we stock. Are you, as an enthusiast, able to justify this? Only you can decide; early adopters always pay more for the privilege of getting their hands on new technology first, but if you do bite the bullet then you will have the satisfaction of knowing your car is wearing a truly exceptional product. And for professional use? Well, in this guise it makes a lot of sense to us, because GYEON Q2 MOHS really is a step ahead of the competition, and being able to much better preserve the amazing finishes we create makes it worth its weight in gold.

GYEON Q2 MOHS is a state of the art quartz coating that simultaneously protects and enhances the appearance of automotive paint. Developed in Japan, GYEON Q2 MOHS uses the latest in low volatile content silicon (Si) technology to lay down a hybrid film of perhydropolysilazane (PHPS), hydroxyl-rich organic copolymers and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) that condenses rapidly to form an amorphous organic-silica nano-composite that chemically bonds to painted surfaces at the molecular level. Unlike rival products, GYEON Q2 MOHS actually gains molecular weight as it cures (as skeletal Si-N bonds are replaced with Si-O bonds), which improves its structural integrity and restricts its shrinkage to 5% during the curing process (the average figure for SiO2 coatings is 30%). As a result, each coat of GYEON Q2 MOHS imparts a measurable 0.2 micron increase in total paint thickness, and significantly improves the scratch resistance of the underlying finish - on average, each coat adds two grades of hardness (2H) on the Mohs scale.

As a result of being coated with an ultra-smooth, extremely dense layer of this organic-silica nano-composite, treated surfaces become naturally water hating (hydrophobic), which causes rainfall and rinse water to bead up and roll off very quickly. This extreme beading not only looks good, but also tends to pick up and carry away fresh contaminants, which, combined with the naturally high scratch resistance of the coating, makes routine washing easier and safer as a result. In addition to this strong self-cleaning effect, GYEON Q2 MOHS also provides excellent protection against bird droppings, bug splatter, road salt and harmful UV radiation for up to eighteen months at a time, even on daily drivers (it is impervious to cleaning chemicals and pressure washing, and once fully cured can only be removed by machine polishing). Although GYEON Q2 MOHS features cutting edge paint protection technology, it has been designed to be easy to apply and remove, and is therefore suitable for use by both car care enthusiasts and professional detailers alike.

You should apply GYEON Q2 MOHS in a dry place out of direct sunlight. In all cases, prepare the surfaces you are going to treat in the normal way (wash > decontaminate > polish), and then do a wipe down with GYEON Q2M PREP to ensure that they are spotlessly clean. Next, using the supplied dropping pipette, lightly wet one of the supplied suede applicators with the product and begin wiping it evenly onto the first panel, using light pressure and overlapping strokes. You should aim to treat no more than a single panel at a time, because after an initial volatilization period of 3-5 minutes you must then buff off the (still wet) residue as quickly as possible, i.e. before it dries out and begins to harden. Buffing off is best accomplished with a PB Super Buffing Towel using moderate speed and pressure in order to fully remove the residue and reveal an intense streak-free shine. Using a bright light, check the panel carefully for any smears and remove them before moving on; failure to remove smears fully can result in them hardening to the point of being impossible to remove without machine polishing, so make sure you are thorough!

After all panels are treated, wait for a minimum of an hour and then apply a second coat. The car must then be left in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight for a minimum of 24 hours to allow the organic-silica nano-composite to harden (if you wish, you can accelerate this process by heating the treated panels to 60C for 10 minutes using an infra-red heat lamp). Finally, to reduce the risk of water spots forming while it continues to cure (full curing takes around 14 days to achieve), you should apply a protective top coat of GYEON Q2M CURE (you should also avoid washing the car with any kind of detergent for the first 7 days). Please note that you must discard all used applicators and towels after youve applied each coat, because GYEON Q2 MOHS hardens massively as it cures, forming a residue that has the potential to inflict severe marring or worse if applicators and towels are re-used. Furthermore, after each use you must also replace the dropping pipette with the air-tight cap, and then wash out the pipette with hot water. Failure to follow these steps will result in any leftover product setting solid in the bottle and the pipette, rendering it unusable in the future.
