We rarely use Blackfire Heavy Cut Metal Compound in our studio, as it is uncommon for us to need to use aggressive metal polishes on most of the cars we detail. However, every now and then a car will come in that has not had its exhaust tip polished in years, and in these cases Blackfire Heavy Cut Metal Compound is a useful product to have to hand. Although it can be applied by hand if sufficient effort is put in, in most cases the use of a rotary style power tool makes a lot more sense and produces far superior results. When we use Blackfire Heavy Cut Metal Compound, we typically tend do so in conjunction with a Dremel power tool fitted with a selection of different polishing brushes and heads. This usually allows short work to be made of even the most neglected tailpipes, although it should be borne in mind that the use of this compound necessitates further polishing with progressively finer metal polishes if a brilliant shine is to be fully restored.
Blackfire Heavy Cut Metal Compound is the workhorse of the Blackfire metal polishing system, and the most aggressive product in the whole range. Technically, Blackfire Heavy Cut Metal Compound is a polishing compound and is designed to remove serious oxidation crusts, weathering residues and stains from bare metals such as aluminium, brass, copper and blended metal alloys. It will quickly remove surface rust from chrome and will buff out harsh stains in stainless steel. It comprises an ammonia-based paste packed full of diminishing micro-abrasives and is formulated to cling to vertical surfaces to make large panel polishing quick and easy. Note that this product is extremely coarse and is designed to produce a uniform, satin base upon which a high quality finish can be achieved using the progressively finer polishes in the range.
Blackfire Heavy Cut Metal Compound may be applied by hand or machine, although the best results are always obtained using the latter. By hand, it should be applied using either a Lake Country Light Cut Hand Pad or 0000 grade steel wool. Only 1-2 pea-sized drops of product are required to polish a 6” x 6” area, and these should be worked in as firmly and evenly as possible until only a thin haze remains. This haze should then be buffed off carefully using an Atomiza Microfibre Work Towel, and the process repeated as necessary until the desired level of correction is achieved. By machine, the choice of method and polishing attachments will be largely determined by the make and model of the power tool that will be used. In general, small rotary style power tools such as those made by Dremel or Proxxon are best, as they are able to access tight recesses around tailpipes and engine bay components quite easily.
