Many car care enthusiasts enjoy washing their cars but find the drying process frustrating. Why? Because towel drying has a tendency to cause marring (unless a time consuming patting method is employed), and leaving the car to dry off naturally often results in water spots appearing. Water spots form when tap water evaporates, and are made of a mineral called calcium carbonate. When this mineral dries out and hardens in hot sunny weather it often becomes difficult to remove, and in extreme cases it can etch the underlying paint. Using an Aqua Gleam De-ionising Water Filter combats this problem by filtering out the calcium carbonate in your tap water. You can then rinse your car and leave it to dry naturally with no fear of water spots forming. The benefits are huge; it not only guarantees a spot-free finish, but also saves you time and cuts out all of the marring-risk associated with towel drying. However, the downside is the Aqua Gleam De-ionising Water Filter has a finite lifespan. Therefore, it is important to choose the right version for the type of tap water you have, as this will help to ensure you benefit from as long a working life as possible. We also recommend using old and new filters in tandem (ideally in a wall mounted stack, with the oldest filter acting as a pre-filter for the newest one), as this ekes out their lifespans even further.
The Aqua Gleam De-ionising Water Filter purifies ordinary tap water by passing it through a chemically reactive resin that strips it of calcium carbonate and other dissolved minerals. Two different versions of the Aqua Gleam De-ionising Water Filter are available; 0 ppm and 30 ppm. The 0 ppm version uses a premium mixed-bed ion-exchange resin that purifies tap water fully to zero parts per million (mineral content). Water this pure provides the best results, but producing it uses up the filtering ability of the resin quite quickly. As such, the 0 ppm version is ideal for use with soft and medium tap water, which needs minimal filtering to begin with. In areas with hard tap water (see map above), it is preferable to use the 30 ppm version instead. This is because the 30 ppm version uses a high capacity resin that limits purification to thirty parts per million (mineral content). This is still sufficient to give spot-free results but demands less of the resin, thus helping to counter the challenge posed by hard water and prolong its working life. The life expectancy of each Aqua Gleam De-Ionising Water Filter wholly depends on how much water is drawn through it and how much mineral content it has to remove, and can thus vary considerably (see graph above). In both versions, the resin gradually changes colour (blue to brown for the 0 ppm version, green to brown for the 30 ppm version) as it becomes exhausted.
You should attach your Aqua Gleam De-ionising Water Filter to a standard hosepipe. Under no circumstances should you try to connect it to a pressure washer; you may damage it if you do. For best results and maximum life expectancy, we recommend wall mounting your filter (with Aqua Gleam Wall Mounting Clamps) and metering out the purified water into a large watering can (using a hose connector with a control valve fitted to the output end of the filter - these can be purchased at most garden centres). Doing this will help to avoid unnecessary wastage. The rinse procedure is best performed as follows. Firstly, rinse off the suds from the wash stage with ordinary tap water. Then turn off the tap, de-pressurise your hose and attach it to your filter. Next, open the control valve and turn the tap back on (this will allow the air in the filter to escape safely as flow commences). Once the watering can is full of purified water, turn off the control valve and begin rinsing your car, working from the top down. It typically takes fifty to sixty litres to rinse an average-sized car, so you will need to repeat this step several times. Once you've rinsed off the whole car, turn off the tap while refilling the watering can; this will de-pressurise the system safely. Once flow has ceased, disconnect your hose and pack everything away - you can now leave your car to dry naturally with no fear of water spots forming! Finally, note that the resin in your filter may degrade if it's exposed to a significant amount of sunlight, so if your filter is mounted in a sunny position cover it with a towel in between uses.
