Congratulations to Gordon Brodie of Blackburn, Aberdeenshire, for winning our April show n shine. After a visit to our premises in Kintore to purchase some new detailing goodies he decided to give his VW Golf R32 a much needed post-winter detail, to rid the car of accumulated grime and road salt and bring the paint back to life with a coat of one of our new Raceglaze premium carnauba waxes.
Gordon started the detail by using his pressure washer to remove as much grime from the exterior as possible, before then foaming the car to loosen the road film ahead of a two bucket wash. After allowing the foam to dwell for five minutes and then rinsing off, Gordon washed the bodywork and glass by hand using Meguiars Shampoo Plus and a Meguiars Lambswool Wash Mitt. At the same time, the complex multi-spoke alloy wheels were cleaned using Autoglym Custom Wheel Cleaner and one of our new wheel back brushes.
After drying off using Poorboys Waffle Weave Towels, Gordon proceeded to clay his bodywork and glass using the Meguiars Quik Clay system. This removed a heap of tar accumulated over the winter period, and restored a lot of clarity to the finish. After the decontamination step, the paint didn't look too bad in the sun, so only a light finishing polish was needed to correct the paint ready for the summer months. The polish of choice on this occasion was Menzerna 85RD, applied using a Meguiars Soft Buff Polishing Pad and a Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action Machine Polisher.
After the polishing step, all that remained was to protect the paint and attend to the little finishing touches. For protection, Gordon chose our new Raceglaze '42' premium carnauba wax. This wax is ideal for enthusiasts wanting to achieve a deep, wet glossy finish on darker colours at a reasonable price point, and as Gordon reports, "it smells lovely!". The detail was then completed by treating the tyres Meguiars Hot Shine Tire Spray, dressing the plastics with Autoglym Vinyl & Rubber Care and polishing the exhaust tips with Meguiars NXT All Metal Polysh. The final results speak for themselves; a deep, wet shine with all of the details nicely attended to. Well done Gordon!
