3M Fast Cut XL is a newly formulated version of 3M Fast Cut Plus. The latter has been a firm favourite in professional detailing circles for many years, but the distinct advantages it offers in terms of cutting power and ease of use have always been blighted by the amount of dust it produces (which is nothing short of epic!). However, 3M have listened to feedback about this issue and now addressed it, by way of incorporating advanced lubricating oils into the formula. Thus, Fast Cut XL offers all of the advantages of the old formula, but with none of the drawbacks; dust production is now minimal and larger panel areas can be tackled without it prematurely drying out. Hats off to 3M for a job well done; Fast Cut XL marks a major improvement in their line up.
3M Fast Cut XL is a fast acting liquid abrasive designed to permanently remove major paint defects such as severe swirl marks, deep scratches and acid etching from original and refinished paintwork and leave a superior high gloss finish ready for final polishing. Like its forbear (3M Fast Cut Plus), it breaks down steadily during use to leave a sharp high gloss finish that subsequently requires only relatively minor refinement. The high level of cut on offer is achieved using ultra-fine, precision-milled aluminium oxide particles, while advanced lubricating oils extend its working time and prevent excessive dusting during use. Like its milder companion products, 3M Fast Cut XL contains no fillers, meaning that defect removal is permanent rather than temporary.
3M Fast Cut XL should only be applied using a rotary polisher. For best results, it should be applied to freshly clayed paint using either a 3M 150 mm Compounding Pad or wool compounding pads if a greater level of cut is required. Only 1-2 pea-sized drops of product are required per 18” x 18” area, and these should be worked in thoroughly at around 1500-2000 revolutions per minute (speed 3-4 on most rotary polishers) using the zenith method until only a thin film remains. This film should then be buffed off carefully using a PB Super Buffing Towel. In all cases, the compounding process should be completed and the finish then further refined using 3M Ultrafina SE.
