3M Extra Fine Compound is designed to permanently remove paint defects such as swirl marks and fine scratches from original and refinished paintwork to create a smooth, highly reflective surface in readiness for the addition of sealant or wax protection. Unlike many other light compounds, 3M Extra Fine Compound breaks down completely during use to leave a sharp high gloss finish that requires only relatively minor refinement. Gloss is maximised by burnishing surfaces to a micro-smooth, highly reflective finish using ultra-fine, precision-milled aluminium oxide particles suspended in a base of oils. Unlike many other polishes, 3M Extra Fine Compound contains no fillers, meaning that defect removal is permanent rather than temporary.

3M Extra Fine Compound should only be applied by machine. For best results using a dual action polisher, it should be applied to freshly clayed paint using a 3M 150 mm Polishing Pad. Only 3-4 pea-sized drops of product are required per 18” x 18” area, and these should be worked in thoroughly at around 4000-5000 orbits per minute (speed 4-5 on most dual action machine polishers) until only a thin film remains. This film should then be buffed off carefully using a PB Super Buffing Towel. For best results using a rotary polisher, 3M Extra Fine Compound should be applied to freshly clayed paint using a 3M 150 mm Polishing Pad. Only 1-2 pea-sized drops of product are required per 18” x 18” area, and these should be worked in thoroughly at around 1500-2000 revolutions per minute (speed 3-4 on most rotary polishers) using the zenith method until only a thin film remains. This film should then be buffed off carefully using a PB Super Buffing Towel. In all cases, the resulting finish should be further refined using 3M Ultrafina SE.
